How we think we are running and how we actually are running are sometimes two very different things. The use of high tech video analysis is no longer reserved just for professional athletes!
We will determine your foot type by assessing the structure of the foot including shape, width, volume and arch height. We then analyse the gait cycle that is unique to each runner by observing the biomechanics of the foot in motion.
We can view and analyse motions at the joints at speeds up to 60 frames per second, 3600 frames in a 2-step gait cycle. There are three stages of the gait cycle.Heel strike, mid-stance, and toe off.It is impossible to see with the naked eye what is exactly happening to the foot and ankle at each of these phases of gait.
With video gait analysis we can clearly see what is happening at each of these phases and measure imbalances. After analyzing your gait we will go over your tape with you, and point out problems that can be corrected with orthotics. We are able to look for gait imbalances, limited range of motion problems, and muscle insufficiencies from all sides to help you with your treatment. We can measure angles at your feet, ankles, knees and hips at all phases of your gait.
The next stage is to have a semi weight-bearing cast of your feet made. These along with your examination results will be made into a custom-made pair of running orthotics. These special insoles go inside your running shoes and help to cure your running injury by correcting any biomechanical dysfunction and making your running as efficient as possible.
Runners, especially, can benefit from video gait analysis by evaluating muscle strength, gait disturbances, shoe choices, and overall training. The one aspect that a runner can control the most is biomechanics. Though it is probably the easiest aspect in running to address, biomechanics is probably the most forgotten link in the improvement chain. Understanding biomechanics is, for most runners, the most neglected and confusing subject in running.
Questions
What is a gait analysis?
A gait analysis involves videotaping you while you walk and/or run to measure excessive or atypical movement patterns. Videotaping is done from the front, side, and rear to obtain a complete view of how you walk and run (your gait mechanics). The information from this is combined with your assessment to provide a comprehensive analysis of your walking and running mechanics.
I've had this injury for several years now. Can you really help?
Absolutely! Many chronic or recurrent injuries are the result of muscle imbalances, muscle weakness, and poor running and walking mechanics. This service is designed to give you a comprehensive analysis of all these factors and provide solutions.
I have pain while doing other sports (soccer, hockey, biking). Can this help me?
Most people have pain while doing other sports. It is also known that daily walking and/or running can aggravate these injuries. This service can help you overcome injuries by identifying how your muscle imbalances, structural differences, and gait mechanics are all related.
I keep getting the same injury over and over. How come?
Many times the way you walk and run is related to muscle weakness and structural imbalances. Injuries commonly reoccur because most people are unaware that the way the walk or run is directly related to these clinical factors.
Can I keep running while I'm injured?
You should significantly reduce your mileage while your injured. However, by correcting the way you run, you can rehabilitate from your injuries much quicker while continuing to run.
